Celebrating Pride Month and Honoring Your Mental Health

June is national pride month across the nation, and many people celebrate for many different reasons.

Pride was started in 1969 with the Stonewall Riots that took place in New York City at the Stonewall Inn in an effort to resist against police brutality and the harassment that took place against the LGBTQ communities. These efforts were to create equal justices and opportunities for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning members of the community. This was the start of outlawing discrimination against the LGBTQ community.

Now every year pride is celebrated with parades, festivals, picnics, branded workshops, art collabs, concerts and much more as a way to symbolize and educate the communities on where the LGBTQIA2+ communities came from, and how they continue to grow.

The pride celebration efforts today are to make everyone feel included, encouraged, and accepted regardless of age, gender, sex, race or sexual orientation. Pride wants every place to feel like a safe and better place for the grown generations of the LGBTQIA2+ community and the younger generations that are up and coming.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the LGBTQIA2+ population is three times more likely to experience depression or anxiety. With that comes a higher chance for the population to suffer from substance misuse and an increased chance of suicide.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness also mentions that LGBTQIA2+ youth are twice as likely to feel extreme hopelessness and sadness in comparison to their peers.

The mental health of the LGBTQIA2+ community is extremely important. It is especially important that the community feels safe, understood and comfortable. The community also needs reliable access to mental health services regardless of their need or background.
